VET Sport and Recreation: Real-World Skills Through Hands-On Learning

The Units 1 and 2 VET Sport and Recreation course takes learning beyond the traditional classroom, immersing students in a highly practical, hands-on environment that closely mirrors real-world industry settings.

With a strong emphasis on applied skills and simulated workplace experiences, this program equips students with the tools and knowledge necessary to transition into the sport and recreation, sport leisure, or sports management and administration work environments.

Throughout the year, students have engaged in a range of dynamic activities, from scenario-based role plays to real-life volunteer opportunities, designed to develop confidence and competence in a variety of practical contexts.

One of the key focuses this term was the unit titled “Provide Hire Equipment for Activities”. In this unit, the classroom was transformed into a fully functioning simulated sports hire shop.
Students were tasked with managing the entire process of equipment hire: from taking customer identification, entering data, calculating costs and pricing, to receiving and inspecting returned items.

They also assessed equipment for any damage and determined whether it was suitable for rehire. Additionally, students were responsible for maintaining and performing minor repairs on equipment, reinforcing the importance of upkeep and safety in a professional environment.

Beyond the classroom, students were given opportunities to apply these skills in real-world settings.

Two students from our North Campus volunteered at the Al Siraat College Islamic Book Fair, assisting with the book sale. In this role, they applied their classroom-learned customer service and retail skills, stocking items, handling both cash and EFTPOS transactions, interacting with customers, and reporting back to event management. These experiences not only reinforced classroom learning but also demonstrated the transferability of their skills into broader industries.
This term has shown how the VET Sport and Recreation program bridges the gap between education and employment. By focusing on skill-building through practical experience, students are better prepared for future roles, not only in sport-specific fields but also in any customer service, retail, or community-focused setting.
